Here at last is one Irish family’s epic journey capturing the tragedy and triumph of the Irish-American experience. In a rousing tale that echoes the myths and legends of Ireland herself young Honora Keeley and Michael Kelly wed and start a family inhabiting a hidden Ireland where fishermen and tenant farmers find solace in their ancient faith songs stories and communal celebrations. Selling both their catch–and their crops–to survive these people subsist on the potato crop–their only staple food. But when blight destroys the potatoes three times in four years a callous government and uncaring landlords turn a natural disaster into The Great Starvation that will kill one million. Honora and Michael vow their children will live. The family joins two million other Irish refugees in one of the greatest rescues in human history: the Irish Emigration to America. Danger and hardship await them there. Honora and her unconventional sister Maire watch their seven sons as they transform Chicago from a frontier town to the "City of the Century" fight the Civil War and enlist in the cause of Ireland’s freedom. The Kelly clan is victorious. This heroic story sheds brilliant light on the ancestors of today’s 44 million Irish Americans. In the author’s colorful and eclectic life she has written and directed award-winning documentaries on Irish subjects as well as the dramatic feature Proud. She’s been an associate producer on Good Morning America and Saturday Night Live written books on Martin Scorsese World War II and Bosnia and a novel based on her experiences as a former nun – Special Intentions. She is a frequent contributor to Irish America Magazine and has a PhD in English and Irish literature.

Hotels in Galway City Centre   by Helen Kelly

Galway city is a magnet for visitors all year round. Among its many attractions are the Spanish Arch and Eyre Square, and you can soak up the unique atmosphere of this pulsating city. The streets are lined with restaurants, pubs, cafes and shops and for somewhere to stay, we have a really good selection of Irish Tourist Board approved Galway hotels.

Hotels in Galway city centre Ireland are always in high demand, especially during the summer months. Nowhere in Ireland beats Galway – it’s buzzing with activity all year round, its nightlife is second to none and the general consensus from its horde of visitors is that it’s ‘great craic’.

There are plenty Galway hotels in the city centre with easy access to its famous landmarks, shopping and you’ll certainly not be too far from a lively traditional Irish pub. The most sought after location in the city centre for Galway hotels is, of course, in and around Eyre Square, and you’ll find it hard to beat the central location of the Skeffington Arms Hotel. This 3 star Galway hotel is actually on Eyre Square, so the perfect place to base yourself.

Forster Street is just around the corner from Eyre Square and there are a number of Galway hotels located here. These include the 3 star Forster Court Hotel, the very comfortable and ultra stylish 4 star Park House Hotel & Eyre House and the 3 star Eyre Square Hotel.

Other top Galway hotels within walking distance of Eyre Square include the 3 star Victoria Towers Hotel which is located in Victoria Place, literally a stone’s throw from Eyre Square, and the very popular 4 star Radisson SAS Hotel on Lough Atalia Road. It boasts a spa and leisure facilities and is ideal for a relaxing break.

The 3 star Jurys Inn Galway on Quay Street is always a popular choice when it comes to Galway hotels. It’s right beside the Spanish Arch, while another Galway hotel in this area on Lower Merchant Road is the 4 star House Hotel.

Other popular Galway hotels in and around the city centre offering an excellent standard of accommodation are the 3 star Galway Harbour Hotel which is only about a 5 minute stroll from Eyre Square, and the 3 star Western Hotel on Prospect Hill. This family run Galway hotel is made up of three Georgian buildings, so has an old style feel.

If you’re not one for the bright lights of the big city why not choose a Galway hotel in one of the leafy and more relaxing suburban areas?

Again there’s a good range of Galway hotels on the outskirts of the city to choose from. The 4 star Ardilaun Hotel is located on Taylors Hill about 1 mile from the city centre. Other options include the 4 Star Westwood Hotel near the University in Upper Newcastle, the 3 star Travelodge Galway Central on the Tuam Road – both of these Galway hotels are less than a mile from Galway city centre.

Other Galway hotels only a short drive from the city centre include the 3 star Flannerys Best Western Hotel, the 3 star Days Hotel Galway, both of which are on the Dublin Road, and for that special weekend away you can treat yourself to the 5 star luxury of The G Hotel which is located in Wellpark.

If you’re in Galway for a race meeting two excellent Galway hotels are the 3 star Racing Lodge Hotel, just off the Galway to Dublin Road and the luxury 4 star Clayton at Ballybrit on the Old Monivea Road.

Other Galway hotels on the outskirts of the city include the Quality Hotel & Leisure Galway in Oranmore, as you’re heading southwards out of the city, the 3 star Huntsman Inn, the 4 star Menlo Park Hotel on the Headford Road and the Courtyard by Marriott at Headford Point.

Also be sure to check out nearby Salthill. This lively seaside resort is only about 3km from town yet you’re right on the coast overlooking Galway Bay. There’s a good selection of Salthill hotels to choose from.
