Shakira was born in Barranquilla, Colombia, a Colombian mother Nidia del Carmen Ripoll Torrado of Spanish origin and an American born father William Mebarak Chadid of Lebanese origin. His older half-sister Lucy is a surgeon, his brother, Alberto, is a lawyer, Moses, the third child, Tonino is the fourth child and the closest Shakira, having worked many years as his road manager. So is Patricia who lives in Spain, is a special education teacher, and finally Antonio and Edward, the youngest who both live in Miami. Shakira began write and compose music at age eight. One of the first songs I wrote called "Your dark glasses" (in your dark glasses), whose lyrical message revolved around his father and his grief for a child who had died in a car accident. At the age of ten, Shakira tried for her school choir, but it was rejected because her voice had been identified "Too loud." Friends teased her by saying she looked like a goat. Shakira started looking for other opportunities to sing, and participated in a weekly television singing contest for children, Vivan Los Niños (Long Live Kids).
Between the ages of ten to thirteen, Shakira was invited to several events Barranquilla, and became a local celebrity. At that time, she met local theater producer Monica Ariza, who was impressed by Shakira and helped make it known outside Barranquilla. On a flight from Barranquilla to Bogotá, Ariza was sitting next to Sony Colombia executive Ciro Vargas. Magia (Magic) was Shakira's debut album, recorded with Sony Colombia in 1991 at the age of 15.
