Open Office saves documents in a readable format? How to solve?

I recently downloaded Open Office, open source software that reflects free Office 2007 (actually Office 2003). Much better than going from 200 to 300 of MS Office. The only thing is that instructions on how to permanently default "new" types of files to match Microsoft Office (. Doc. xls,. Ppt). So it seems that all the documents I create in Open Office are not compatible with Microsoft Word. (Other people can not open documents to send them unless you change this first) suggestions on how to proceed?
