Best Binoculars?

What’s the best brand and type of Binoculars for a budget of $60.00 or under ? It’s for just looking at the neighborhood and messing around…looking at people.

Go to a sporting goods store or a department store and check out Bushnell binoculars. They are the most commonly available brand that is decent in your price range. Look for some 8×42 to 10×50 as the most useful sizes. By that, I mean the magnification should be either 8X or 10X and the diameter of the larger element should be somewhere from 42 to 50 mm. 10X are a little harder to hold still but give a slightly larger image. They are also better for viewing stars and meteors.

I won’t get into roof prisms or BAK-4 prisms, etc., sine your price is going to pretty much determine what features you can get. In the under $60 range, I would NOT get roof prism binoculars, even though they might look cooler. Prisms have to be lined up extremely accurately and this is harder to do in a roof prism design, so the cheaper ones (if there are any available) are often not very good.

You might like to get a zoom binocular, which I think you can find for $60. They are not the greatest optical quality, but they are fun. By “not the greatest,” I don’t mean that you shouldn’t buy them, because they will be fine for your purposes. You just won’t want to go looking for the moons of Jupiter with them.

I just saw a pair of Bushnell “Falcon” 10×50 binoc’s for $35. They should be just fine for your neighborhood viewing. I’m pretty sure this is what my mother had for birdwatching out her living room window. It has an easy-to-operate focus mechanism.
